What’s Quantitative Easing and what’s the Fed trying to accomplish?

By Allen G. Yee

Newspapers and financial publications alike have been abuzz with talks of QE2, a move in which the Fed will be purchasing up to $600 billion in US securities and in the process lowering interest rates.  But amidst the plan to lower interest rates, the question arises- But aren’t rates already practically zero?

(Almost) Famous Recipe: No-Chex Snack Mix

This is a very large-batch mix (suitable for sharing with the office!) If you can bring yourself to use bacon grease – JUST THIS ONCE – it will be oh, so much better. If you can’t bring your toned and trim self to do so…well, we understand (and we’re perhaps a teensy bit envious). Adjust the spices to your preferences and make it “your own”~~~

(Almost) Famous Recipe: Mom's Cheesecake with Strawberry Sauce

I didn't know until I was grown that everybody didn't make cheesecake in a 10" Pyrex pie plate. They no longer make the pie plate, so I now buy them for gifts on EBay. Mom's cheesecake is one she had to replicate for Dad after their first trip to New York in the 1970s, where they had their first cheesecake ever at Wolfie's Deli. The strawberry sauce is her own creation and the perfect cheesecake mate!

What Does a Weak Dollar Mean to You and Your Investment Portfolio?

(Almost) Famous Recipe: "Even-If-You-Don't-Like" Cranberries Casserole

Ok, that's not the real name - it's Cranberry Apple Casserole. But I have to admit that a lot of folks have found out that they can eat cranberries - and love them - after sampling this casserole. And I can be pretty persuasive when it comes to "encouraging" those at our Thanksgiving table to give my dishes a try. This recipe came from the late Joyce Fox, my boys' "Granny".

Year-End Investment Planning Is More Challenging in 2010

If you don’t normally review your investments at the end of each year, 2010 might be a good time to start. And if year-end investment planning is already part of your routine, you might want to pay special attention this year. Why?

Summary of the New Financial Reform Law

The financial reform bill recently signed into law is an attempt to address some of the problems that contributed to the 2008 financial crisis. The legislation, officially known as the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, is considered the most wide-ranging overhaul of the U.S. financial system since the aftermath of the Great Depression.

The “Giving Pledge” to Ignite Philanthropy

A few weeks ago more than three dozen billionaires signed up for The Giving Pledge an effort by Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett to encourage wealthy people to give at least half of their fortunes to charity.

Is it safe to get back into the water?

Seems to me that many analysts, advisors, and media outlets that are bullish on domestic stocks, believe the market correction that we’ve experience over the last several weeks is over.  Market pundits points that the markets are oversold – a technical analysis term describing a stock (or market) falling too far and/or is underpriced, i.e.

The Big Lie About Personal Finance

The basics of personal finance are simple. Regardless of how troubled their financial lives, I have yet to meet anyone who doesn't already know what they should be doing. Everyone knows they should save for the future and not spend more than they make.
